OREA President Cathy Polan’s Statement on Passage of Bill 2, Protect Ontario Through Free Trade Within Canada Act, OREA

June 4, 2025

“The passage of Bill 2, the Protect Ontario Through Free Trade Within Canada Act, is a big step forward towards eliminating interprovincial trade barriers, and the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) looks forward to seeing the positive impact this legislation could have on real estate and homebuilding in Ontario. During these uncertain economic times, OREA is very supportive of the work that the Government of Ontario has been doing to protect jobs, address the cost of living, and ensure all Ontarians have a great place to call home.

As the provincial government begins their work implementing Bill 2, we are calling on decision-makers to consider how this legislation could impact the Trust in Real Estate Services Act (TRESA) and Ontario’s wider real estate industry. OREA strongly supports interprovincial labour mobility and red tape reduction, but we want to ensure that these efforts do not derail the progress we’ve achieved on professional standards through TRESA – including increased protections, raising the bar on REALTOR® education and professionalism, and deterring bad behaviours with stronger penalties. At the end of the day, Ontarians should have confidence in their REALTOR®, the market, the regulator, and the government’s commitment to consumer protection.

We look forward to continuing our work with the Ford government in supporting labour mobility and economic growth, while also ensuring that we preserve and strengthen the North American-leading standards we’ve built under TRESA.”
