“The Government of Ontario has delivered a big win for the Ontario Real Estate Association’s (OREA) nearly 100,000 REALTORS®, announcing that it is consulting on proposed changes to the Trust in Real Estate Services Act (TRESA) to strengthen consumer protections in the province’s real estate industry.
For more than ten years, OREA has called on the provincial government to elevate the real estate profession by improving consumer confidence with increased protections, raising the bar on REALTOR® education and professionalism, and deterring bad behaviour with stronger penalties for those who break the rules. Our advocacy efforts continued with our 2024 whitepaper, titled Continuing to Raise the Bar for Real Estate in Ontario, featuring nine bold policy solutions for the government to implement in the third and final phase of TRESA.
This includes our longstanding policy ask to allow administrative monetary penalties for minor black-and-white infractions, such as advertising violations. OREA is pleased to see the government heed our call on this ask, which would allow disciplinary resources to be focused on the profession’s worst offenders. However, strong safeguards are essential for this measure in order to protect both real estate professionals and consumers.
OREA will be analyzing the proposed changes to understand the full scope of what’s included in the consultation document. OREA is proud to advocate for bold actions like this, and we commend Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement Stephen Crawford for advancing this important consultation.”
