OREA Statement on Ottawa City Council Passing New Zoning By-law, OREA

February 20, 2026

“Last month, Ottawa city council unanimously passed a new zoning by-law that will make it easier to build much-needed homes in the city by encouraging gentle density in neighbourhoods and building near major transit stations.

For years, the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) and our nearly 100,000 REALTORS® have called on decisionmakers to end exclusionary zoning and allow for building along transit corridors to bring more supply to market and help Ontarians save time and money when commuting to work.

OREA is thrilled to see the City of Ottawa embrace bold actions that will ensure more homes are built in the communities people want to live in, and we commend the work done by the Ottawa Real Estate Board (OREB) in advocating for this important change.

This decision by Ottawa city council is the type of leadership needed in municipal governments across Ontario if we want to create a housing market that works for everyone. Ottawa needs to keep this pro-growth, pro-housing momentum going, and also consider other policies that will lower the cost of homeownership, like reducing municipal development charges.

OREA looks forward to seeing the results of this new zoning by-law and will continue to work with our Member Boards to advocate for policies that will bring affordability back and help Ontario families find a great place to live.”
