A Conversation Between Virginia Munden and Don Inouye on REIC’s Ethics Pulse Report

Virginia Munden: Don, the Real Estate Institute of Canada’s Ethics Pulse Report has generated considerable discussion across the industry. What prompted REIC to undertake this initiative?
Don Inouye: At REIC, we believe professionalism begins with listening. The Ethics Pulse Report was born from a simple but important question: How do real estate professionals feel about ethics, professionalism, and leadership in today’s market? Through our national Virtual Think Tank, we invited voices from across Canada and North America to share their perspectives. The result wasn’t just a report. It was a snapshot of the industry’s collective conscience and a call to action for leaders at every level.

Virginia: One of the things we’ve championed at Buzz Media is elevating the conversation around professionalism. How does the report connect to that broader objective?
Don: The report reinforces something you’ve been advocating for years through your conferences, publications, and leadership forums: professionalism doesn’t happen by accident. It requires intentional leadership, continuous learning, and a willingness to engage in difficult conversations.
Many of the findings pointed to the fact that consumers, employers, and industry stakeholders are looking for more than technical competence. They’re looking for trust. They’re looking for ethical decision-making. They’re looking for leaders who can navigate complexity while maintaining integrity. That’s exactly the type of conversation Buzz Media has been fostering across the country.
Virginia: We’ve had the opportunity to work together at several events, including leadership panels and at our BUZZ conferences. Did you see any common threads between those discussions and the report findings?
Don: Absolutely. Whether it was the leadership conversations in Toronto, the discussions in Calgary, or the panels we’ve participated in together, a consistent theme emerged: the future of real estate will be shaped by leadership quality as much as market conditions.
The Ethics Pulse Report confirmed what we’re hearing from professionals everywhere. There is a growing recognition that designations, credentials, governance education, and ethical leadership are not “nice to have” additions. They’re becoming essential professional competencies.
That’s why leadership panels resonate so strongly. They create space for experienced professionals to share not only what they’ve accomplished but how they’ve made decisions, managed challenges, and maintained credibility throughout their careers.

Virginia: What message do you hope industry leaders take away from the report?
Don: I hope they recognize that ethics isn’t simply about avoiding misconduct. It’s about creating cultures of excellence.
The strongest organizations and most respected professionals are often those who prioritize transparency, accountability, mentorship, and continuous improvement. Ethics becomes a strategic advantage because it builds trust, and trust remains the foundation of every successful real estate relationship.
Virginia: Finally, how do you see the report influencing the industry’s future?
Don: I see it as the beginning of a larger conversation. The report provides valuable insight into where professionals are today, but its real value lies in what happens next.
I want to acknowledge the important role Buzz Media has played in advancing professionalism across our industry. Through your conferences, leadership forums, and ongoing commitment to elevating industry dialogue, you’ve consistently provided a platform for these conversations to happen. The Ethics Pulse Report complements that work by adding the industry’s voice to the discussion.
Together, I believe we can continue to challenge ourselves to raise standards, strengthen leadership, and ensure professionalism remains at the heart of the real estate profession for generations to come.
